Breaking Boundaries, Taking Risks: DFW Women Leaders Are Setting The CRE Agenda
Bisnow’s third annual DFW Women Leading Real Estate event highlights the industry’s executives and leaders. These women are shaping the agenda, improving the fortunes of those coming up behind them and, in the words of 2023 honoree Tanya Ragan of Wildcat Management, making the most of a career that allows women to “break boundaries and take risks.”
The 26 women celebrated this year include developers, personnel professionals, women in financial services, and sales and leasing dynamos. It also highlights women making a name for themselves in operations and asset management as well as those redefining construction, engineering, architecture and design.
All of them have done so in an evolving but still male-dominated industry, especially at the boardroom and executive levels. Women make up 25.6% of the highest-ranking executives at the country's largest commercial real estate firms, according to Bisnow’s 2022 industry analysis. Female executives of color are even rarer.
That is something this year’s honorees are determined to change.
“Being a Hispanic female in the commercial real estate industry, I've often faced underestimation,” said Amanda Moreno Lake, founder and CEO of Moreno Lake Redevelopment. “Through my experience, I am committed to mentoring and empowering other women who have encountered or are currently facing similar challenges.”
DFW’s female leaders in CRE are no strangers to navigating obstacles, and they are approaching today’s downturn with tenacity and grit. Economic turmoil has provided an opportunity to foster a resilient and collaborative environment while encouraging their teams to find creative solutions to complex problems.
“I continue to remind the team to stay active in looking for deals, as I tell them that the downturn is a small window of finding fantastic opportunities,” Navi Ventures partner Diana Lin said. “We continue to underwrite conservatively and seek properties that will be resilient during a recessionary period.”
This year’s cohort comes from diverse backgrounds, and their paths to success are personal and unique. But what they all have in common is a genuine desire to help other women achieve their goals and rise through the ranks of CRE.
“I witness the empowerment and balance that women at our company can achieve,” B2 Architecture and Design founder and CEO Allison Brooks said. “They excel in serving clients, advancing their careers, nurturing their families, cherishing their pets and more.”
This year’s DFW C-suite leaders, profiled below, will be honored at a Nov. 15 event to recognize their achievements and offer attendees education, networking and resources for professional development.
Also among the honorees this year are: Crow Holdings Capital Chief Financial Officer and Senior Managing Director of Portfolio Management Cyndy Silverthorn, President of Ponce/Picasso Contractors Elizabeth Ponce, Bank of Texas Dallas Market President and CEO Mandy Austin, Cushman & Wakefield Central Regional President Victoria Malkin and ICSC Chief Operating Officer Valerie Richardson.
