CREW Denver recently held a panel discussion about the future of hospitality at The Ritz-Carlton Denver, and Bisnow was there. The speakers said hotels are upping their game when it comes to amenities, both in-room and in their properties. They are putting interesting elements in each hotel room, looking to provide a "mixed-use experience within the hotel."

Food and beverage is where a boutique hotel differentiates itself, especially from the big brands. These hotels are working with chefs, creating signature meals and cocktails. Who wants all that? Experiential-minded Millennial travelers, for one, who are now the rising wave of travelers. But not just them. Older travelers appreciate amenities that make their stays better.

Technology will continue to have an impact on the hotel business, the CREW speakers said. Some apps will allow mobile check-in, and turn smartphones into room keys. Reward points will be earned through social media, and there will be instant gratification for customers: for instance, app users may get a free drink at the bar while spending time in the lobby.

Finally, the speakers did not think the likes of Airbnb will be a threat to hotels' core business. Corporate clients are not looking to use Airbnb. And new hotel brands — Element in the case of Marriott — can compete directly with Airbnb, with brands geared toward groups traveling together to give them both their own private and communal space.
