€1B Dublin Amazon Data Centre Gets Planning Permission

An appeal to stop Amazon’s plans for a €1B data centre in north Dublin has failed.

According to the Irish Times, Athenry-based engineer Allan Daly, who is also an objector to Apple’s stalled plans for an €850M data centre in Galway, had his appeal dismissed. That gives Amazon’s Irish unit, Amazon Data Services Ireland, the green light to build the centre.

The online giant employs 2,500 staff in Ireland and its web services division already has a number of data centres in Dublin, but its Mulhuddart plan, named “Project G”,  is its most ambitious to date in the country.

The plan initially includes a 223K SF data centre in Mulhuddart, and it has told Fingal County Council it might build a further seven data centres on the 26-hectare IDA-owned site.

A senior planning inspector with the appeals board said the provision of such major digital infrastructure, comprising a major data centre, “must surely be viewed positively”.

The IDA told the appeals board that it views data-centre facilities and infrastructure as crucial to Ireland’s ongoing competitiveness.

In his appeal, Daly stated that Amazon has failed to provide data in terms of how much power from the grid the new centre would require.
