A clinician, researcher and medical educator, Larry J. Goodman, MD, is the chief executive officer of Rush. He also serves as president of Rush University, president of the Rush System for Health, and principal officer of the Rush Board of Trustees. Goodman was also president of Rush from 2002 until September 2010. Prior to being named president and CEO, Goodman was senior vice president for medical affairs at Rush University Medical Center and the Henry R. Russe Dean of Rush Medical College. Before accepting the position of senior vice president in 1998, he was medical director of Cook County Hospital (now John H. Stroger, Jr., Hospital of Cook County), a position he had held since 1996. During this time he also served as professor of medicine and associate dean of Rush Medical College. In 1987, he was named associate dean for medical student programs at Rush. He later served Rush Medical College as director of the division of specialized training programs and as director of inter-institutional affairs at Rush. In that position he played a critical role in crafting the academic affiliation agreement between Rush and Cook County Hospital. Goodman has published in such prestigious publications as the Journal of the American Medical Association and the Journal of Infectious Diseases. His research has focused on infectious diseases, particularly gastrointestinal infections in HIV-positive patients. He is also known for promoting innovation in medical education, and has written extensively about such issues as curricula and how students select a specialty for residency training. Goodman received his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1976, having graduated with distinction from the University of Michigan's undergraduate program. He came to Rush University Medical Center in 1977 as a resident in the Department of Internal Medicine. He was named chief resident in 1979. He subsequently completed a fellowship in infectious disease and joined the faculty and staff. Goodman's numerous honors and awards at Rush include being named Outstanding Medical Resident in 1979 and Medical Attending of the Year in 1984. In 1988, he was inducted into the Mark Lepper, MD, Society of Teachers at Rush MedicalCollege. Graduating medical students honored him three times by presenting him with the Phoenix Award for Clinical Teacher of the Year. On a national level, Goodman has served as a site survey team member for the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, which accredits medical schools.
