City Of Houston Approves $3.4M Affordable Housing Project
The city of Houston approved $3.4M in project funding to local nonprofit affordable housing developer Avenue. The developer will soon construct Avenue Center, a mixed-use community resource center on Houston's north side. The project is expected to break ground in the second quarter and open in early 2020.
The three-story, 30K SF facility will include community programming space, a homeownership center, a health clinic, an early childhood education center and Avenue's headquarters and realty office. It is situated across from Moody Park at 3527 Irvington Blvd.
“We are delighted to start constructing Avenue Center, which will provide greater access to vital resources for area residents, especially low-income families,” Avenue Executive Director Mary Lawler said in a release. “The generous support of the City of Houston and our public and private partners is furthering our shared mission to strengthen communities and improve the quality of life for all. By conveniently colocating important supportive services such as healthcare, childcare and home-buyer education, we improve the resilience of the neighborhood.”
This is just the latest financial component for Avenue Center. Last month, the Greater Houston Community Foundation provided $2.6M for the project, which was part of a $6.5M pledge from the United Arab Emirates to support Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts.
