HUD Allocates Millions More To Houston Flood Recovery
On Friday the Department of Housing and Urban Development announced an additional $163M to help several communities recover from severe flooding in 2015 and 2016. The Houston area will receive more than $30M.
The bulk — $20.5M — will go directly to Houston for the 2015 floods, for which HUD has already paid out roughly $67M. An additional $15.6M will be split between Harris, Hays, Hidalgo and Travis counties. HUD will also pay about $6.8M for the 2016 floods split between Harris, Newton, Montgomery, Fort Bend and Brazoria counties.
While the funds will certainly be put to good use in recovery efforts, funding for a solution to the area's continued flooding issues remains severely lacking. Recent estimates put that number anywhere from $10B to $15B.
