Green Line Finally Running, A Crucial Connector For East End
Today marks the first day of operation for METRO's recently completed Green Line. The line has nine stops, beginning at Downtown's theater district and terminating in the East End at the Magnolia Transit Center, a crucial connector between Houston's light rail and bus systems, Houston Public Media reported. The timing couldn't be better — officials expect Houston's light rail to play a major role in moving people to and from events during the upcoming Super Bowl LI festivities.
The recently completed $30M Hughes Street overpass was the final piece of the Green Line puzzle. During the ceremony for the first ride across the overpass, METRO CEO Tom Lambert said the overpass will also ease traffic for drivers. Riders will be able to ride the Green Line for free through Jan. 22. [HPM]
