Battleship Texas Returns To Service
The USS Texas lives to serve another day. After being closed for nearly a week, the 105-year-old battleship is back in action after emergency repairs were made. Divers reportedly found several more leaks than expected. At its worse, the ship was at 8% list.
“It puts tremendous stress on not only the hull but the mooring system we have,” Battleship Texas Assistant Superintendent Stephanie Croatt told KHOU.
The ship has been sitting in the water at San Jacinto since 1988. But the ship has proven to be a survivor, not only in two world wars but also as a steadfast Texas monument. The ship was closed to the public last year to repair leaks. Some have feared the ship may not last much longer unless it is dry-docked. For now, the USS Texas will fight on against time.
