Now That Cruise Business Has Dried Up, Port Of Houston Looks To Offload Gangway System
The $108M gangway project that now sits unused after Houston's failed excursion into the cruise business is finally up for sale.
Today, port commissioners voted unanimously to authorize the sale of the gangway system that led passengers to the ships, the Houston Chronicle reports. The promised boost in tourism never materialized, and was put to bed for good when two cruise lines made their final voyages from the Pasadena site last April.
The terminal was built with funds included in a 1999 Harris County bond issue. As recently as 2012, commissioners approved $6.7M in incentives to Norwegian Cruise Line and Princess Cruises to sail regularly from the location. Neither operator renewed, instead shifting ships to other markets. After years of struggle, the terminal's ship has finally sailed. [Chron]
