Medical Device Manufacturer Building HQ In Burgeoning Pearland Life Sciences Hub
Houston-based medical device manufacturer Millar Inc. announced Wednesday it will be moving to Pearland and unveiled plans to construct a 56K SF headquarters and manufacturing facility on a 5-acre tract in the city’s Lower Kirby District near several other life sciences companies.
The developer and manufacturer of pressure sensor-enabled devices has been working with city officials and the Pearland Economic Development Corp. on the relocation since 2017, according to the Houston Business Journal, and has now acquired a PEDC-owned tract on Kirby Drive just south of Beltway 8. The headquarters facility, set for completion in 2022, will employ about 120 workers and house Millar’s R&D, manufacturing and warehousing functions.
“Many of our employees currently reside in Pearland, and as we bring new MEMS sensor enabled products to market, we are excited to continue to bring new jobs to the community,” Millar CEO Tim Daugherty said in a statement. “We felt the Lower Kirby district to be an ideal location that can support Millar’s long-term growth plans for the future.”
The company, founded in 1969 and currently located at 6001-A Gulf Freeway in Houston, has been a pioneer in integrating its pressure sensor technology into catheters for life sciences and clinical applications. Its new location in the Lower Kirby District puts it close to other companies specializing in life sciences, including Merit Medical’s R&D and manufacturing facility, Cardiovascular Systems Inc.’s medical device manufacturing facility and Switzerland-based Lonza’s viral and immunotherapy development and manufacturing operation, the largest dedicated cell and gene therapy manufacturing facility in the world.
“The City of Pearland is honored to welcome Millar to Pearland and we look forward to a long partnership between them and our community,” Pearland Mayor Kevin Cole said in a press release. “It has been a long-standing goal of the City to cultivate a diverse spectrum of life science and medical device related organizations to the community, specifically Lower Kirby, and Millar’s selection of Pearland for its headquarters and manufacturing facility is a testament to our efforts.”
The new facility is being designed by Clay Development, with Method Architecture leading architectural and interior design efforts.
