Houston's 5 Biggest Multifamily Projects Under Construction

More than 20,000 units are slated to deliver in Houston this year. With help from Apartment Data Services and CBRE, we rounded up the largest communities underway. You might enjoy a sigh of relief—they’re spread all over the metro.

1. The James of River Oaks

Units: 645

Delivery: Q2 ‘15

Address: 2400 Mid Lane

Developer: Stonelake Capital Partners and StreetLights Residential

Architect: Looney Ricks Kiss

Formerly known as Azalea Court, the James of River Oaks includes an eight-story mid-rise (344 units, delivering in Q2) and 20-story tower (timeline and name TBD). The multifamily development is just the first phase of a larger mixed-use project (it'll tentatively include office, retail and hotel), and it’s adjacent to Highland Village.

2. The Commons at Hollyhock

Units: 624

Delivery: Q2 '15

Address: 5751 Greenhouse Rd

Developer: Camillo Properties

Architect: Meeks Partners

Phase 1 of this Katy project (264 units) delivers in June (with all units open by the end of the year), followed by a 360-unit second phase that may break ground in Q2 '16. It includes ground-floor retail, so residents can pop down for dinner or coffee (or head through the drive-thru coffee bar on their way to work). The community will also feature a putting green and bark park, plus keyless entry into the units. Bring the kiddos—the project’s practically surrounded by schools, with Emery Elementary on the west, Mcfee Elementary just to the north and Cypress Lakes High to the east.

3. Market Square Tower

Units: 463

Delivery: Q4 ‘16

Address: 777 Preston St

Developer: Woodbranch Investments

Architect: Jackson & Ryan

Market Square Tower was incentivized by the Downtown Living Initiative, and at 40 stories, it’ll be Downtown’s tallest residential tower. It includes 22k SF of ground-floor retail. Residents will enjoy the Market Square frontage, plus an indoor basketball court, virtual simulator, and rooftop pool 500 feet above the street.

4. Tate

Units: 431

Delivery: Q3 ‘15

Address: 5880 Inwood Dr

Developer: ZOM Texas

Architect: Looney Ricks Kiss

You might have heard of this Galleria-area project by its previous name, The Hudson. The four- and five-story wrap is ZOM’s third development in Houston. It’s adjacent to a retail center anchored by HEB (that store opened last week), and residents will have a golf simulator, membership-quality fitness center, three courtyards (one with resort-style pool, one with a fountain and one with a lawn), dog park and pet salon. What makes this project unique: the brick warehouse/industrial feel.

5. Alexan Wilcrest

Placeholder

Units: 414

Delivery: Q3 ‘15

Address: I-10 at Wilcrest

Developer: Trammell Crow Residential

Architect: EDI International

TCR’s expanding its Alexan brand with this four-story wrap in West Memorial. It’s mixing things up a bit with 18 three-story townhomes as well as the typical one- and two-bedroom apartments. Alexan Wilcrest hasn’t finalized a rendering to share, so we pulled this pic of Alexan Auburn Lakes, which delivered last year.
