Whole Foods Opens Downtown Indy Store

After years in the works, Whole Foods Market has opened in Downtown Indianapolis at 320 East Market St.

The 40K SF store has been planned since 2015, when it was announced as part of the mixed-use 360 Market Square apartment project.

Since then, various delays beset the project, including a period of uncertainty because of Amazon's acquisition of the grocery store chain last year, the Indianapolis Business Journal reports.

The store will feature a taproom with 20 Indiana beers on tap, a coffee bar and 100 varieties of cheese. It will also include Amazon lockers.

The Downtown Indianapolis store is the fifth location for Whole Foods in Indiana. The other four are in Carmel, Nora, Schererville and South Bend.

The opening comes at a time of tumult for the grocery industry, besides the new presence of Amazon in the game. Regional chains are filing for bankruptcy and the likes of Aldi and Lidl are expanding aggressively in the United States.
