Born in South Bend, IN, Conrad Prebys was raised in a working class neighborhood where most were set to work in the local factories. This plan was dashed for Conrad, however, when he learned he had a heart condition that would prevent him from doing such manual labor.
Now encouraged to further his studies, Conrad became the first of five to attend and graduate from Indiana University and first in his entire neighborhood to go beyond high school. In 1965, Conrad moved to San Diego in 1965 and co-founded Progress Construction to get in on the city’s building boom.
Eventually buying out his partner in 1980, Conrad soon realized that he could make more as an owner than he could as a builder. He now owns 81 properties totaling 7,099 units in greater San Diego. Always willing to share his fortune with the San Diego Community, Conrad has given capital and operating gifts to the Boys and Girls Clubs of East County, the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Opera, and many others.
