Tony Malkin owns the iconic Empire State Building and 18 other properties in NYC, totaling more than 8M SF. The Empire State Realty Trust (founded by Tony’s grandfather) went public in 2013, selling at $13 a share for $71.5M after raising $929.5M in its IPO. He’s known as a leader in building energy efficiency retrofits through coordinating the Clinton Climate Initiative, Johnson Controls, JLL and Rock Mountain in a groundbreaking project at the Empire State Building.
At a 2015 event, Tony spoke to Bisnow about the importance of communication in his company, and said no chairs in the company’s conference rooms will have arms. Because if you get arms, everybody sits back. Tony said he doesn’t want people sitting back; he wants people leaning forward. Tony likes to ride motorcycles, something you may not expect from a Harvard cum laude alum (especially one who majored in English and concentrated in theatrical literature).
