This family has everything you could want in a New York real estate dynasty: famous buildings, towering wealth and no small share of public drama.
Officially founded in 1927, the Durst Organization’s roots go back to a single building purchased in 1915. Its holdings today include a 10% stake in the Western Hemisphere’s tallest building, One World Trade Center. The company also maintains a controlling interest in Four Times Square and One Bryant Park, where the firm keeps its headquarters.
The empire is now headed by Douglas Durst. His brother, Robert, was the subject of the 2015 HBO documentary “The Jinx,” which explored multiple murders Robert allegedly committed over several decades. A trial for one of those deaths is scheduled for next year in Los Angeles.
The Durst family announced its first investment outside of New York earlier this year, buying a large property along the Delaware River in Philadelphia. — Scott Klocksin
