John Malone is majority owner of a telecommunications empire composed of Liberty Media, Liberty Global and Liberty Interactive. For 24 years, he served as CEO of TCI. During that time, he was known for high-profile battles with the Federal Communications Commission over what he viewed as the over-regulation of the cable industry.
In 2011, he became the largest individual private landowner in the U.S., surpassing Ted Turner. His roughly 2.1 million acres include land for Silver Spur Ranches, a ranching and beef producer with properties in Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming. The bulk of his land is in Maine. — Scott Klocksin
