Founded by Charles Kushner in 1985, Kushner Cos. has been helmed by Charles' son, Jared, since Charles’ 2005 conviction for illegal campaign contributions, tax evasion and witness tampering, which resulted in a two-year prison sentence.
Jared has pushed for aggressive investment in New Jersey, with projects like One Journal Square, a 79-story mixed-use development nearing completion in Jersey City. The firm also has a significant presence in the Dumbo neighborhood of Brooklyn, where it has an ownership stake in several properties that were part of the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ Watchtower portfolio.
When he was just 25, Jared purchased the New York Observer and published the paper until stepping down in 2016 to take a senior adviser role in the Trump administration. He also stepped down as CEO of his firm, but the family still owns the company with tens of thousands of apartments in its portfolio. — Scott Klocksin
