New HUD Rule Calls for Affordable Housing in Wealthy Neighborhoods

Placeholder

As the affordable housing crisis heats up, a new rule issued Wednesday by the Department of Housing and Urban Development will now require some communities to take a closer look at segregation and address it by offering more affordable housing. HUD secretary Julian Castro says the measure helps provide "access to safe, affordable housing in communities that are rich with opportunity." Communities that don't follow the rules will no longer be able to get grants and other HUD financial support. Opposition sees the rule as government overreach and an assault on American neighborhoods. Communities will now have to look at race, poverty and access to schools, among other factors, when making development decisions.
