He's in the Navy Now (Temporarily)
Harley Ellis Devereaux's Roy Reel boarded the USS Spruance as a guest of the Navy League, a citizens' org that supports the Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, and other branches of US sea services. Roy (with a crew member) tells us the excursion from San Diego to LA included a live firing of the ship's guns, 35-degree rudder turns at high speed, and emergency stops.
The Spruance, one of the Navy's new guided-missile destroyers, was built in 2012 at a cost of $1.85B. (For that, you'd think they could throw in a water slide and some poolside cabanas.) It boasts a crew of 325 and a speed in excess of 30 knots. (That's 35 mph to us landlubbers.)
