Repairs May Be Needed At The Long Beach Pier Before The Olympics
Now that it is official the 2028 Olympics will take place in LA, will the city be ready?
The Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier will need some major improvements first, according to Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia.
He said the pier, which the LA2024 committee had earmarked to serve as a viewing area during the Olympics' sailing competition, is in need of major repairs that could cost as much as replacing it, between $25M and $35M, the Long Beach Press-Telegram reports.
The 1,620-foot-long pier is 50 years old.
Long Beach is also slated to host the Olympic triathlon, water polo events and marathon swimming. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum will host the opening ceremonies as in the two previous LA Olympics.
UCLA and USC, the Rose Bowl, Dodger Stadium, DTLA, the StubHub Center and the Forum in Inglewood will also serve as Olympic venues.
