Huge Project Could Change The Look Of The Arts District
The largest project to date could soon be built in the Arts District in DTLA.
It would be built on a 14.6-acre property bordered by Sixth and Alameda streets.
Irvine's SunCal bought the property last year for $130M, Curbed reports.
It plans to build a huge complex with two hotels, 1,736 condos and apartments, offices, retail space and even a school, according to the LA Times.
Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron would design the project, the first for the Pritzker Prize-winning firm in LA.
The project's exterior, dubbed 6AM, would be mainly framed in concrete surrounded by large blank spaces that would make space for murals.
Building the two towers would require a zoning change and a general plan amendment, which could prove problematic if the Neighborhood Integrity Initiative, which aims to crack down on big developments and those requiring general plan amendments and zoning changes, passes in March. [Curbed]
