LA Aims To Legalize Illegal Apartments
The Los Angeles City Council voted Tuesday to approve a plan that will keep some illegal apartments available for rent.
The bill, first proposed two years ago, aims to address “bootlegged” apartments, or units that do not have city permits.
The multifamily units have to have been “bootlegged” prior to Dec. 10, 2015, according to My News LA.
The policy could help residents avoid eviction, but landlords have complained it is too strict.
Among the list of requirements is landlords must make an additional multifamily unit affordable for 55 years for those with low incomes.
City officials cited the owners of 2,560 illegal units between 2010 and 2015. Around 201 were legalized while 1,765 were pulled off the market. [MyNewsLA]
