Downtown LA Icon Clifton’s Opens Thursday

Clifton’s Cafeteria, an 80-year-old Downtown LA icon on South Broadway, is making a comeback of its own. Shuttered four years, Clifton’s will reopen at 11am on Oct. 1. New owner Andrew Meieran, who also opened the popular Edison Lounge in a renovated power plant on Second Street, has invested $14M restoring the famous, 47k SF, five-story eatery to its original glory.

Patrons can expect the same charming Clifton’s they've frequented for decades, but an updated version all shiny and new. The cafeteria-style menu, developed by chef Jason Fullilove, formerly of the Malibu Pier Restaurant & Bar, includes the classic carving station, mac & cheese, meatloaf, sandwiches and lots of Jell-O. Bartenders Damian Windsor and Jason Bran, formerly of the popular Roger Room, will be preparing the cocktails.

Well known for feeding people down on their luck, Clifton's will continue in that spirit, but indirectly by encouraging diners to donate to Midnight Mission or other homeless outreach group in Downtown. [Eater]
