LA's First Amazon Go Grocery Store Opens in Whittier
One of Amazon's many grocery offerings, Amazon Go, has opened a 4K SF location in Whittier, making it the first such store in the Los Angeles area.
Similar to a convenience store, the storefront at 14249 Whittier Blvd. will sell prepared foods, Starbucks coffee, and beer and wine, L.A. Business First reported. The store will also allow customers to return Amazon items and have lockers for deliveries.
Amazon plans to open another, larger Amazon Go in Hawthorne. The 6K SF store is expected to open soon.
The rollout of Amazon Go stores has been slower than earlier predicted, CNBC reported earlier this year. The company once hoped to have thousands of stores open by 2021, but instead has about two dozen operating. Amazon Go stores had been concentrated in areas that were more prone to foot traffic from office workers, but have now gone more suburban, CNBC said.
The Amazon Go stores have technology that allows shoppers to walk out with their purchases, skipping a stop at the register. Shoppers scan a credit card or their Amazon app when they arrive and are charged as they leave. Self-checkout lines are also available for shoppers who'd rather not scan in.
Amazon opened a clothing store called Amazon Style at the Americana at Brand in Glendale earlier this year.
