The Boring Co. Gets Thumbs Up To Build Tunnel Under Hawthorne
The Hawthorne City Council has approved plans for Elon Musk's Boring Co. to build a two-mile test tunnel under the city.
The council approved the decision last week in a 4-1 vote, Curbed Los Angeles reports.
The Boring Co. already has begun work on a smaller tunnel under its SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne.
The new tunnel will reportedly be longer, allowing for Musk's proposed zero-emission transportation system to be tested. Musk said the system could move cars and small shuttles on electric sleds at speeds of up to 125 miles/hour.
It would be between 22 and 44 feet below ground and about 12.5 feet wide and be built under a SpaceX parking lot and extend out to Hawthorne Boulevard.
Construction on the underground tunnel is expected to take around five months.
