Alonzo Mourning Realizes His Affordable Housing Ambition
AM Affordable Housing and Housing Trust Group broke ground on the 84-unit Courtside Family Apartments in Miami’s Overtown district. AM Affordable Housing director and former Miami Heat star Alonzo Mourning predicts that the property will create a more pedestrian-friendly environment on the grounds of the Culmer Neighborhood Center and be a catalyst for future development in Overtown. "The people in this community deserve a better way of life," Alonzo tells us. Snapped: Housing Trust Group president Matthew Rieger, Alonzo and Housing Trust Group principal Randy Rieger.
Courtside is the first phase of a three-phase planned development, with the second phase set aside for a senior population at an estimated 120 units. The exact character of Phase 3 is still to be determined, but it will include about 80 units and target special needs populations, such as the formerly homeless, veterans or foster care students who age out of the system when they turn 18. Alonzo says he pursued the project as another aspect of his charity work in Miami.
