REIT Returns Outpace The S&P 500 In March And In First Quarter

Returns on public REITs seriously outdid the S&P 500 during March and through Q1 ’16, according to NAREIT data.

The total return on the FTSE NAREIT All REITs Index hit nearly 10% in March and 5.86% in Q1, compared to the S&P 500’s 6.78% and 1.35% returns in March and Q1, respectively.

REIT shares faced stiff headwinds in January and February, just like the rest of the market, NAREIT president and CEO Steven A. Wechsler (pictured) says. “But REITs experienced a stronger recovery than the broader equity market in March.”

Steven adds that REITs gains were helped by growing investor recognition that REITs are putting out strong operating results and high dividends for shareholders.
