REITs See Modest Gains In January, Up A Mere 0.2%
Though a large number of investors have turned to REITs since Election Day, the sector lagged the rest of the market in the first month of 2017.
The FTSE/NAREIT All REIT Index advanced 0.2% in January, far behind the S&P 500 index’s 1.9% growth, NAREIT reports. Mortgage REITs did better, returning an average 1.6%, and experts said investors are waiting to see how President Donald Trump's administration impacts markets before making a move.
Among REITs, timber was January’s biggest winner with an average 3.7% in return and industrial REITs were the losers, falling 6.5%. Yet despite that loss industrial REITs have beaten the broad stock market in the last one-year and three-year periods. [NAREIT]
