TeliaSonera Finishes 100 GB Upgrades; Transatlantic Cabling Next?
TeliaSonera International Carrier has launched its 100 GB network in North America and Europe, the first fiber backbone carrier to have such capacity on both sides of the pond. (Only One Direction has more fans on both sides.) Now the challenge is getting the fiber connecting the two continents to match that, says the firm's Ivo Pascucci. Were evaluating our options," he says, noting the company is not considering laying down its own fiber, a big investment. For now, TeliaSonera is part of a consortium that uses nearly half the capacity of two intercontinental fiber networks running beneath the Atlantic Ocean and has a presence in a variety of other transatlantic cables.
This is TeliaSonera's current Transatlantic map. As customers bundle more 10 GB routes on single-fiber pipes, it makes more sense for them to simply jump to a 100 GB network, he says--something impossible to do between continents at this moment. What were seeing now is larger RFPs in the market for lots of capacity in both North America and Europe, including corporate road maps to 100 GB. Its certainly something thats a priority for us," he says.
