Powder Mountain Brings Crowdfunded Ski Resort to Utah

Powder Mountain, the crowdfunded "next-generation Alpine town" in Eden, Utah, got the big New York Times treatment this weekend. Founders Jeff Rosenthal, Brett Leve, Jeremy Schwartz and (Bisnow co-founder and namesake) Elliott Bisnow will break ground this summer on a public village two years after buying land in the "backwater," where plans for a traditional ski resort had tanked along with the global economy during the Great Recession.

Enter Summit Series, the young Bisnow's conference-hosting company whose events have featured talks by the likes of Bill Clinton and Richard Branson. Summit bought the Eden land in 2013 for a reported $40M thanks to crowdfunded investments from Branson, actress Sophia Bush and WPP Chairman Martin Sorrell, among about 50 other deep-pocketed fans of the company. Now, an enlightened ski resort is set to rise and will include "a vehicle-free Main Street lined with farm-to-table restaurants and pop-up stores and co-working spaces and second-story condos." There will also be 500 homes and cottages, all built with sustainability in mind.

“What Tesla did to cars,” Bisnow, told visitors in January, “we’re going to do with towns!” [NYT]
