Report Shows 2016 Was The ‘Year Of The Skyscraper’
The world’s cities are getting taller. A new report shows more skyscrapers were completed in 2016 than any year prior.
The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat report showed 128 buildings of more than 650 feet were completed last year, Building Design Construction reports. That’s more than the 114 constructed in 2015 and brings the total world skyscraper count to 1,168, a 441% increase from the 265 that stood at the start of the 21st century.
Of those built last year, 84% of are in Asia and more were built in China than any other country. Despite an impressive year overall, 2016 saw only 10 supertalls (towers 985 feet tall and up) completed. That’s fewer than the 14 built in 2015 and the 11 built in 2014. [BDC]
