CyrusOne Heads To Ashburn, Beyond

National Data Center

CyrusOne has finally ascended the mountain of data center Gods: Ashburn, Va. (A little quieter than Olympus, but the weather's nicer.)

One of the country's largest enterprise data center operators is finally headed to Loudoun County--one of the country's largest, if not the largest, data center hubs –-with a 400k SF data center. (It's like making the varsity roster.) We spoke with CyrusOne's CEO Gary Wojtaszek on specifics to the plan, and what comes next. Initially, CyrusOne will build-out 124k SF with 60k SF raised floor and 15k SF of office space fed by 12mw of power. The 14-acre site is in the Loudoun Tech Center.

Ashburn “has been the number one spot our customers request we go to,” Gary tells us. It's got rich fiber and cheap power. (Stop, you're making Ashburn blush.) And it has all CyrusOne's competitors, allowing it to keep its customers instead of trading them off to someone else. But more importantly, Gary says demand for data centers isn't going away as more and more companies outsource their operations, something that will be in place as a growth trend for the next decade. Gary also tells us the firm plans to announce another East Coast facility this year, and will develop two new markets every year going forward.
