QTS Expansion Spree

National Data Center

A burst in business has QTS expanding its data center in Atlanta, its biggest market. (To misquote Jaws: "They're gonna need a bigger boat... to store digital pictures of boats.")

QTS reported in its latest annual report that it plans to expand its raised floor offerings at both of its Atlanta facilities this year. And sources say it may even begin a third metro Atlanta data center by 2016. The company is redeveloping 106k SF of raised floor this year at Atlanta-Metro. It already has 292k SF of raised floor, 98% of which is leased to some 206 customers (the total facility is 969k SF), and it could expand by another 134k SF in raised floor in the future. According to state officials quotes in SEC doc, the expansion will cost approximately $32M. Sources indicate that indeed QTS' 100k SF expansion in Atlanta comes with a customer pre-leased in tow, but officials declined to ID that tenant.

The company also is adding some 30k SF of raised floor for $2M at its Suwanee facility in metro Atlanta. The 320k SF facility (with 214k SF of raised floor already in service) is more than 85% leased. And it also controls some 15 acres of land adjacent to the property that can be used for an additional 262k SF of data center space (or as a nice picnic area), but at this point, there are no plans to build it out.
