Airbnb, Uber Do Not Lead The Independent Job Force
A full 27% of working-age Americans engage in independent work, yet Uber and Airbnb account for a sliver of that.
That’s according to a new survey from the McKinsey Global Institute, which shows that only 4% of the working-age population in the US and Europe use online gig-work marketplaces, Bloomberg reports. The study acknowledges “rapid growth of the largest platforms suggests we have only just begun to see their impact.”
That leaves the bulk of the independent job force unexplained, and the report’s authors say it’s critical for policymakers to learn more about gig work so they can better comprehend trends like increasing part-time employment and the declining jobless rate. [Bloomberg]
