Department Of Veteran Affairs To Sell Off Or Raze All Vacant Buildings In Next Two Years
The Department of Veterans Affairs announced plans to sell, reuse or demolish all of its vacant buildings over the next two years.
In addition to this, VA Secretary David Shulkin said the department is reviewing more than 780 underutilized buildings to determine how to monetize those assets to reinvest the funds in veterans’ services, CoStar reports.
These buildings includes a 899K SF hospital in Los Angeles that was built in 1952; a 187K SF Pittsburgh hospital built in 1953; and a 134K SF housing building built in Milwaukee in 1869.
“Maintaining vacant buildings, including close to 100 from the Revolutionary War and Civil War, makes no sense and we’re working as quickly as possible to get them out of our inventory,” Shulkin said. “We will work through the legal requirements and regulations for disposal and refuse and we will do it as swiftly as possible.”
