Here's Airbnb's Most Popular Listing
With celebrities listing homes—and other A-listers renting them!—you'd think the most popular Airbnb listing would be...well, different from this. What started as a DIY kit for a newly homeless friend in the woods of Aptos, CA, has now become the most popular rental on Airbnb since first listing seven years ago.
The Mushroom Dome Cabin—a self-declared “geodesic dome loft”—got on Airbnb when the site was only 11 months old and was one of the first listings outside cities. Here's what it looks like.
The owner, Kitty Mrache, originally advertised the cabin on Craigslist but became frustrated with how undependable people were. “They would say they were coming and then wouldn’t show up,” she tells The Guardian.
When the Mushroom Dome hit Airbnb’s website, it got bookings immediately, she says. The Mushroom Dome Cabin was originally just 100 SF, and since then it has been moved, expanded and fixed up. Despite the upgrades, its rustic charm remains unchanged.
The owners are honest about the cabin’s size, too. “The cabin is not as big as it looks in this photo,” one caption of the listing reads. But that honesty has done nothing to scare away guests, with bookers jumping at the chance to squeeze three people into the cabin for $110 a night.
After all, the waiting list is months long—every weekend is booked through the spring and summer and the Mushroom Dome only had three vacant nights last year. [TheGuardian]
