BOSTON: City Greenlights $200M Mixed-Use Complex

It was six years in the making, but The Nordblom Co finally got city approval on its $200M multifamily and retail complex in the South End. (When it began, Lolo Jones was still a summer Olympian, and people thought "Sochi" was mediocre raw fish.) While there are still several more approvals to snag, EVP Og Hunnewell (above, with Todd Nordblom and Steve Logan) says Nordblom is excited about the approval of the two-building project, which contains 602 apartments (some workforce) and 34k SF of ground-floor retail.

In '12, the city rezoned the neighborhood, allowing for the additional height in Nordblom's two 14-story towers, where they hope to start construction on the CBT-designed complex this fall. National Development and Normandy Real Estate Partners are also building major multifamily projects nearby, but that doesn't worry Og; he says they're complementary and creating a critical mass of activity and vibrancy in a long-overlooked district. It would be more challenging to be a lone pioneer, he says.
