Barclays Fires CEO Antony Jenkins
Barclays chief executive Antony Jenkins was fired today after the bank's board decided new leadership was needed to take the London-based company in a new direction. John McFarlane, the newly appointed chairman, will serve as his interim replacement. Barclays shares rose 3% in the wake of the news. Jenkins learned of his ousting last week and was "incredibly professional" in his reaction to it, McFarlane said. He added that there had long been murmurs of discontent and a need for change among the bank's nonexecutive directors, who were frustrated by lukewarm results during Jenkins' three-year tenure at the top. The Wall Street Journal noted that today's news makes Barclays the fourth big European bank this year to replace its CEO, following Deutsche Bank, Standard Chartered and Credit Suisse. [WSJ]
