BMX Pro Tears Up the Abandoned Silverdome
The buzz around Detroit's (very fledgling) comeback seems to be growing. Yet while start-ups, artists and Quicken Loans founder Dan Gilbert have led to a modest revival downtown, the Motor City is, and will for a long time, remain home to a trove of derelict homes, factories and even sports stadiums.
But the city's abandoned spaces are not without a forlorn beauty. And a bit of ingenuity can put them to new uses long after their original purposes expired. BMX star Tyler Fernengel's session (courtesy of Red Bull TV) in the abandoned Silverdome is a short-lived retrofitting of the Detroit Lions' former home. But his leaps throughout the desiccated arena may stand as a metaphor for Detroit's future rise.
