JPMorgan Market Manager-Midwest Real Estate Banking Manager, Chicago
Michelle Herrick has been in the commercial real estate industry for 15 years. Herrick is responsible for overseeing mortgage originations at JPMorgan for commercial assets throughout the Central U.S. She joined JPMorgan’s team in Chicago in October 2017 and prior to that she was at Bank of America for nearly 10 years.
Commercial real estate is constantly changing and I find it challenging and exciting following macro trends and adapting to the evolution of how people work-live-play. I’ve been in the industry for 15 years and just before I started my career, I had a summer job working in a department store’s call center where I spoke with retail customers to manually complete their catalog purchases. Almost everything about that transaction is different today and that has had a major impact on the real estate industry. It’s fascinating to watch how the industry is changing.
I did a rotation in commercial real estate during a commercial lending training program and I’ve enjoyed working in the industry ever since. I enjoy my role of helping our team support our clients and provide a wide variety of solutions and services, as they plan, adapt and succeed for the long term.
The industry has come a long way. I’ve seen momentum in attracting and promoting women leaders in CRE finance and I expect that trend to continue.
The industry has made strides, but there’s always room for progress in every aspect of the business. I’m a believer that workforce diversity comes with creating an environment where people are trusted, supported and are able to bring their authentic selves to their roles. Companies and managers successful in this will attract and retain the best talent in the marketplace. In my personal experience, I’ve been lucky to work where that valued environment exists and to have incredible managers, peers and clients who both serve as mentors and support me in various roles.
I’ve found that the most impactful support in my career was from establishing real relationships, where I’ve been able to receive honest feedback, trusted guidance and validation. Whether it’s various industry programs, networking groups for employees, mentorships, or recruiting efforts — they all help talented individuals find the connections and support needed to succeed in the finance industry.
My main advice to my former self is the same advice I’d give myself today: Work hard and enjoy life. Enjoying all of the things that matter most will help you be a happy and well-rounded individual each day in your role at work.
