Robyn Sorid was a transactional real estate lawyer before entering the world of commercial real estate finance. She now oversees an array of investment activities, including origination, structuring and real estate transaction as a managing principal at G4 Partners. Sorid has managed transactions in excess of $1B and is currently overseeing the launch of the company’s latest investment fund, G4 Capital Partners III L.P.

How Did You Get Your Start In CRE Finance?

I was previously a commercial litigator and a transactional real estate lawyer. The transition to the business side was always something I wanted to do and was fortunate to find a compelling opportunity to leave the law by joining a client who was launching a real investment business.

Why Specialize In CRE Finance?

I love financing real estate as opposed to a different underlying asset class. I particularly enjoy financing assets in the New York area and watching as neighborhoods that I live and breathe in are transformed. I’m currently working on three projects in lower Manhattan that we're really excited about.

Are Women Represented Enough In CRE Finance?

I don’t think there's a magic number to representation, but I think the industry would be well served by continuing to grow the number of women in senior leadership roles especially in large financial institutions.

Can You Speak To Your Experience/Treatment As A Woman In CRE Finance?

I’ve had male and female mentors in both law and in finance and have been fortunate to operate in communities that were merit-based.

What Can The Industry Do To Encourage Bringing More Women Into The Finance Space?

I'd focus on retention rather than at the entry point and my experience has been [that] professional growth and advancement is all about identifying the right mentors/coaches in your profession.

What Advice Would You Offer Your Former Self About Navigating The World Of CRE Finance?

The advice I would give to my former self, which is one that I heed to this day, is to be most careful about who you chose as partners because that will carry you much further than good fundamentals or documents. You can always weather a bad deal with good partners but the reverse isn't always true. I heard that early in my career and it’s really proven to be great advice.
