What You Don't Know About Younger Partners' Greg Grainger
Position: President, Younger Partners Property Services
Location: Dallas
Responsibilities: The overall performance of the management company in terms of platform services, team leadership, industry insight, thought leadership, overall client portfolio performance and overall financial performance.
Career: Before Younger Partners Property Services, served in property and asset management roles for Colliers, JLL, CBRE, Archon Group, Transwestern and JPI/Aston Property Co.
How he got into property management: Like most, this was accidental. Having started my college studies in the school of architecture, I saw little opportunity in that field for a graduate emerging in the late 1980s. Therefore, I switched to a business program and eventually earned a bachelor's in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance. Not knowing what to do with a background in real estate design and real estate finance, I responded to an ad for an assistant property manager position with JPI and the rest is history.
Industry and life extracurriculars: I remain very active in both BOMA and BOMI. I’ve served BOMA in many capacities at the local, state, regional and national levels, culminating in serving as president of both BOMA/Dallas and president of the Southwest Region. One of my passions is education; I have served at multiple levels at BOMI and just recently as chairman.
Daily habit: I enjoy the down time associated with walking Nestle, our mixed-breed (Terrier, Catahoula, Border Collie, etc.) dog. She is almost 14 years old and, in the near future, our “walk” will require me to carry her.
Family life: Married to Natalie for 23 years. Our daughter Jordan attends the University of Arkansas, while son Reese is starting at the University of Arkansas in the fall. We have two dogs Nestle (14) and Cassie (6), and one lucky five-week-old kitten named Simba, who was rescued from certain death on a highway by Reese just two weeks ago.
Favorite book: Any thriller and/or suspense-type novel. I am a huge Stephen King, John Irving, Tom Clancy, John Grisham, Clive Cussler and David Baldacci fan.
Favorite music: ‘70s and ‘80s rock 'n' roll.
Favorite movie: Not a huge movie fan. I like to read, and it makes it hard to enjoy a movie when you’ve visualized the characters differently.
Favorite restaurant: Mexican in general.
Favorite vacation: Family vacation to Honolulu and Maui.
First job and what it taught you: Landscape construction. Hauling dirt, rocks, bricks, etc., while mixing mortar and "wheelbarrowing" all of it uphill (seems like it was always uphill) gave me an appreciation for hard work. That is why I graduated from college, so I wouldn’t have to do that for the rest of my life.
Job in another life: Attorney.
Item on bucket list: See my children established in their chosen career and with their mate.
Person he'd like to meet, dead or alive: Benjamin Franklin.
Hobbies: Reading and yardwork.
Startling fact: I have an unnatural/irrational fear of snakes. I once sat in my car for over 20 minutes too scared to exit because a snake was crossing the parking lot and after trying to run over it, I didn’t see it in my rearview mirror. My thought was that it had wrapped around my axle.
