Beauty Retailers Expand Despite Struggling Sector
Big-name beauty retailers are expanding their footprint, despite major challenges in the retail industry and waning efforts to compete against e-commerce.
Ulta Beauty announced plans to open 100 stores this year, and following closely behind is Sephora, which plans to bring 60 outlets to existing JCPenney retailers this year—a relationship that has thrived for 10 years.
The beauty industry has a major advantage against e-commerce giants like Amazon.com, as its services cannot be duplicated online, National Real Estate Investor reports.
“Take companies like Ulta Beauty and Sephora. They are insulated from Amazon.com,” Davidowitz & Associates chairman Howard Davidowitz says. “Amazon can’t put makeup on you. They are doing something Amazon can’t do (and) that’s a very big deal.” [NREI]
