Exclusive Q&A: Simon Property Group's Plans For Silicon Valley's Great Mall
Simon Property Group is making significant upgrades and renovations at Silicon Valley's Great Mall. Bisnow spoke with GM Michael Strle about the scope of the renovations, timelines and what’s he’s proudest of with the project.
The Milpitas mall is Northern California’s largest “outlet and value retail shopping, entertainment and dining destination.” These enhancements include the installation of new energy-efficient LED lighting throughout the property, new floor tiles and fixtures, and the installation of two infinity fountains.
Bisnow: What motivated the renovations?
Michael: As a major shopping destination in the Bay Area, we continually strive to exceed shopping expectations and wanted to create a brighter, more inviting atmosphere inside the center to enhance the shopping experience for the millions of local shoppers and visitors in Silicon Valley.
Great Mall will be 22 years old this September and a lot has changed over the past number of years with the addition of new retailers and dining options. Over the past two years, Great Mall has added UNIQLO, Cole Haan, Kipling, The Limited Outlet, Guess Factory Store, O’Neill and Tommy Hilfiger.
The modern renovation plans we have in store will not only bring a fresh new look to the mall, but also provide additional amenities for shoppers, including soft seating, charging stations and modern infinity pools to accommodate the large number of locals and visitors coming to Great Mall.
Bisnow: When will the project come online?
Michael: Construction is set to begin this spring through the remainder of the calendar year, with the majority of renovations completed in time for the holiday shopping season. Shoppers will not be inconvenienced during renovations, as all stores, entertainment and dining options will remain open during the renovation process.
Bisnow: What are you most proud of with the design?
Michael: We are most proud of the overall change of aesthetic the renovation will bring to the center. The new modern color palette, flooring and lighting will be a dramatic interior transformation that will provide a new experience for shoppers and complement the exciting retail offerings.
