Walmart Tests New Gas, Grocery Hybrid Stores
Say hello to Walmart Pickup and Fuel, the leading retailer's new hybrid combo that combines same-day pickup for groceries ordered online with the classic convenience store model.
The firm is testing the idea in two locations to start—one in Thornton, CO, and one in Huntsville, AL—and if successful, these hybrid stores could pose a serious threat to Amazon, Business Insider reports.
Walmart’s new model is similar to the grocery store format Amazon plans to launch (the king of e-commerce hopes to roll out 20 small grocery stores by the end of 2018), though it looks like Walmart beat it to the punch. On top of typical convenience store offerings, Walmart's shops will offer online grocery pickup for items ordered before 1pm that day. [BI]
