Walmart Wants To Send People Into Your House To Stock The Fridge When You’re Not Home

Walmart is going the extra mile. In addition to delivering fresh food to customers's doors, the world's largest retailer wants to unpack and stock shoppers's cabinets as well. 

Walmart is teaming up with smart-home devices maker August to streamline the delivery process. The new service is being tested with August doorbell and security cameras, among other devices, and will provide customers with the ability to have packages and groceries delivered inside their homes rather than left on the doorstep outside, TechCrunch reports.

Walmart will use delivery drivers from Deliv, a service used by Walmart-owned Sam’s Club, to drop off the items using a one-time passcode to get into the homes. Notifications are sent to customers throughout the process so they are kept in the know about what is happening from beginning to end.

Those concerned about security can even watch the delivery take place simply by tapping on the smartphone notification, Fast Company reports, which activates the August camera that was installed when they opted in for the service.

This latest Walmart concept puts the retailer one step ahead of Amazon’s Prime service, which boasts the ability to deliver groceries in a matter of hours to prime members. 

As for Walmart, the retailer wants to eliminate the risk of groceries being stolen by storing items safely inside customers' homes instead of leaving them at the door. Pricing for the new Walmart service has yet to be determined and will likely be based on what customers are willing to pay for a service such as this one, TechCrunch reports.

Testing is set to start soon in the Silicon Valley area but will only involve customers who have opted in.
