Top 10 Student Housing Owners
More players are joining the student housing industry as the demand for beds increases across the country. It’s one of the reasons we’re excited to bring you Bisnow’s Annual Student Housing Summit (BASH) on June 2 in Philly. We asked Axiometrics student housing research analyst Taylor Gunn to help us assemble the top 10 student housing owners based on most owned off-campus beds.
1. American Campus Communities
Home base: Austin
Beds owned: 86,000+
More: ACC has more than 3,100 new beds delivering this fall after adding more than 3,600 beds in fall 2014. CIO William Talbot (right, with Harrison Street Capital SVP Brian Thompson) will be among the BASH speakers.
2. Campus Crest Communities
Home base: Charlotte, NC
Beds owned: 42,000+ (including the enormous Copper Beach portfolio acquired in 2013)
More: CCC delivered more than 4,300 beds in fall 2014. CC president Aaron Halfacre will also speak at BASH.
3. Education Realty Trust
Home base: Memphis
Beds owned: 23,000+
More: More than 900 beds will be delivered this fall as part of a JV with a cottage-style project, the Retreat at Louisville (University of Louisville) and another at the University of Georgia. Another 1,600 on-campus beds will deliver at the University of Kentucky this fall as part of the EdR’s ONE plan. 4. Asset Campus Housing
Home base: Houston
Beds owned: 19,000+
More: Over 900 beds will deliver this fall at Baylor University and Texas A&M. ACH recently assisted in a record-breaking early lease-up for a project it manages, which will deliver at A&M University-Kingsville this fall.
5. The Scion Group
Home base: Chicago
Beds owned: 15,000+
More: No scheduled deliveries this fall, but the firm’s been working on startup labs and philanthropic opportunities, as well as Zipcars and retail on-site.
6. The Collier Cos
Home base: Gainesville, FL
Beds owned: 14,000+
More: The second phase of Lux13 Apartments at the University of Florida with 160 beds will deliver this fall. Founder Nathan Collier will speak at BASH.
7. Capstone Collegiate Cos
Home base: Birmingham
Beds owned: 12,000+
More: More than 1,600 beds will deliver in the fall with the Cottages at Tempe at Arizona State and Phase 2 of Northpoint Crossing at Texas A&M.
8. Campus Apartments
Home base: Philadelphia
Beds owned: 10,000+
More: Has a $400M fund with $1.2B in buying power and has already started acquisitions with a focus on well located Class-B product that can be renovated and rebranded. CEO David Adelman will be a BASH speaker, too.
9. Aspen Heights
Home base: Austin
Beds owned: 10,000+
More: More than 600 beds delivering this fall.
10. Campus Evolution Villages
Home base: New York City
Beds owned: 8,500+/-
More: Founded in 2012 and growing quickly. CEO Andrew Stark (here, with CIO Evan Denner) will speak at BASH.
