86 Of The Country’s Biggest Metros Are Sitting Out The Tech Boom
Most of the U.S. is missing out on the tech industry’s massive growth.
The majority of tech jobs are created in the Bay Area and a few other core tech hubs, leaving 86 of the country’s largest 100 metros to watch as their share of the tech industry shrinks year by year, MarketWatch reports. The Bay Area, including San Francisco and Silicon Valley, now makes up 10% of the nation's digital services employment. The divide between tech cities with high salaries and U.S. cities with stagnating salaries is growing, and experts said the trend impacts everything from economic to political differences.
Those differences have shown up recently, with the tech industry largely opposing President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. Its stance is not surprising, considering 37% of Silicon Valley’s workforce is foreign-born.
