Social Media Tips: 5 Things #CRE Professionals Shouldn’t Do

Last week we showed you how the #CRE industry can take full advantage of social media app Vine, and before that, we gave you a list of Twitter users who'll keep you in the know

But successful social media marketing isn't as easy as clicking "Submit." So before you get too social media-crazy, keep in mind these mistakes to avoid that could unravel all your efforts. (And we don't mean the common sense stuff, like posting inappropriate things.)

1. Posting only personal updates.

Enough with the office party pictures. While the occasional personal picture is great for humanizing your digital account, flooding it with non-work related posts debilitates your account becoming a useful resource for advertising your business. Make sure to have a marketing angle on most posts that go up.

2. Posting too much or not enough, and at the wrong times.

Don't post something in the middle of the night and expect it to get a lot of views. Here's the breakdown: things on Twitter or Facebook should go up after lunch and Google+ or LinkedIn posts should be published in the morning. And don't go overboard on one site. No one likes a feed-hog.

3. Not posting original content.

Retweeting or resharing interesting posts and articles is great but also boring if that's all you do. Add some flair and prove why you are educated in your industry by posting original content with a niche focus to draw in business. Cushman & Wakefield does this by sharing its research via Twitter.

4. Not using images or videos.

Hate to say it, but words aren't enough to capture audiences. Data scientist Douglas Mason analyzed millions of tweets last year and found that those tweets with photos had the highest percentage of retweets. Cool visuals on social media can also act like digital billboards for advertising in a fun way.

5. Not engaging with followers.

Hello? Are you there? Interacting with your followers through replies and likes adds personality to your social media profiles and helps you connect and build useful relationships.
