Walmart Mimics Amazon’s Move To Make Checkout Faster
Walmart is creating new checkout lanes that work in conjunction with the Walmart app to get customers out the door quicker.
The move mimics Amazon’s cashier-free technology, but does not go as far since Walmart’s app does not handle the entire checkout process. The express lanes are only planned for Walmart’s pharmacy and money services area, where long lines are a common complaint, the Washington Post reports.
Experts said online shopping has changed the definition of convenience, and retailers are racing to find ways to make visiting their stores as painless as possible. In that spirit, Walmart is also testing technology that allows customers to scan items with their phones to ring up their own purchases away from the checkout line.
